"Dangerous Woman" by Ariana Grande - Single Review

Ariana Grande hasn't lost focus when it comes to her upcoming third studio album Dangerous Woman (out on May 20)... but she has moved passed and forgotten all about the project's original lead single, released late last year. Instead, the "Problem" songstress shares the title track as the new lead in, a sultry pop effort with alternative R&B flare that seems to be taking cues from former duet partner The Weeknd. Gone are the loud brass instrumentals, and in walks a vibe perfect for the introduction of the villainess in the next James Bond film.

"Dangerous Woman" is a commendable slow jam that puts the spotlight on Grande's seductive vocal performance, as she is supported by actual instrumentals mixed in to the song's alluring production. The artist has always faced criticism for a lack of annunciation during her delivery, but while dialing back on an abrasive, radio-ready beat, Grande is able to overcome that slight problem on the new release. There's a sense of confidence, instead of the artist playing up her innocent image. No time to be shy anymore.

On the surface, the track sounds to just have an erotic subject matter, with Grande persuaded to take risks (maybe in life, and in the bedroom) by the love of a new man, but the lyrical content also digs a bit deeper into the artist's personal life. "Don't need permission, made my decision to test my limits, 'cause it's my business, God as my witness, start what I finished," she proudly declares on the intro, another testament to not apologizing for past actions.

There's no "Focus" gimmicks this time around, no need for a male-assisted chorus, just Grande using her raw talents to the best of their abilities. "Dangerous Woman" is the most enticing lead single from a Grande album, thanks in part to commanding instrumentals used as the main backdrop, including an actual guitar solo. A guitar solo incorporated into a pop song in 2016? Crazy talk. It may have some similarities to her previous releases, but her new single finds Grande stepping outside the box, into a whole new genre she's prepared to dominate.

So yes, she changed the title and concept of her upcoming album at the last minute. Sure, "Focus" may have peaked at number seven on the Billboard charts, but it definitely wasn't the bonafide hit she was probably expecting. However, "Dangerous Woman" is working hard to correct the mistakes of the early album promotion. Fit for the Fifty Shades Darker soundtrack, the new song is an impressive change of pace that puts artistry above the chase for a mainstream smash.
